Het oeuvre van Matt Johnson, de muzikaal architect van The The, mag dan niet zo heel groot zijn, imposant is het wel degelijk. Op doorbraakalbum Soul Mining (1982), een absolute klassieker, volgden een reeks ijzersterke albums waar in 2000 ineens een einde kwam. Een The The optreden in 2002 op het door David Bowie gecureerde was het laatste voordat Johnson in 2017 nieuwe optredens aankondigde.
